Addis Abeba –  Eritrea’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Sophia Tesfamariam, has told senior US diplomats that there is no “crisis” between Ethiopia and Eritrea, while urging Washington and other international actors to address what she described as threats to Eritrea’s sovereignty and territorial integrity

In a statement posted on X on 20 October, Sophia said she held “constructive engagements” with Mike Waltz, the US permanent representative to the UN, and Jeffrey Bartos, the US representative to the UN for Management and Reform, to discuss developments in the Horn of Africa and present Asmara’s position on the region’s deteriorating security situation.

Over the last two weeks, the two countries exchanged accusations at the United Nations over their deteriorating relations.

Ethiopia sent a letter to the UN Security Council in early October accusing Eritrean forces of an “all-out invasion” of parts of Tigray in northern Ethiopia and invoking its right to self-defence.

Eritrea rejected Ethiopia’s account and, in its own communication to the Council, accused Addis Abeba of threatening a war of aggression over Red Sea access.

The two governments’ competing accounts have emerged alongside renewed fighting in northern Ethiopia and heightened fears of a broader regional conflict.

Sophia said she had “reiterated that there is no ‘crisis’ between Eritrea and Ethiopia” and argued that the international community should pay closer attention to developments within Ethiopia. She urged Addis Abeba to “respect Eritrea’s sovereign territories and stop diverting attention from its domestic issues.”

The ambassador also accused Ethiopia of pursuing a three-year campaign concerning access to the Red Sea and making continued threats against Eritrea’s sovereignty, including what she described as threats to annex Eritrean territory.

She called on countries with influence in the region to act “responsibly and proactively” to prevent a wider conflict, cautioning them against making statements that could embolden Ethiopia’s leadership.

“Eritrea’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected,” she said, adding that preventing renewed conflict requires addressing underlying threats, upholding international law and acting before tensions escalate. AS
Had constructive engagements with H.E. Mike Waltz, Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations, and Ambassador Jeffrey Bartos, U.S. Representative to the UN for Management and Reform.

Discussed recent developments in the Horn of Africa and presented Eritrea’s perspective on the evolving regional situation. Reiterated that there is no "crisis" between Eritrea and Ethiopia, and underscored the need for the international community to pay closer attention to the worrisome developments within Ethiopia. The most important issue is for Ethiopia to respect Eritrea's sovereign territories and stop diverting attention from its domestic issues.

Outlined Ethiopia's three-year-long campaign concerning the Red Sea and its continued threats against Eritrea’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, including threats to annex sovereign Eritrean territories. Urged those with leverage to use it responsibly and proactively, to prevent unnecessary wars in the region. To refrain from making statements that embolden Ethiopia's leadership.

Also briefed them on Ethiopia’s expulsion of Eritrea’s representatives accredited to the African Union and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, as well as the breakdown of diplomatic relations initiated by Ethiopia and reciprocated by Eritrea.

Eritrea’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected. Preventing renewed conflict requires addressing the underlying threats, upholding international law, and acting before issues escalate.
