The African Development Fund has approved a grant of $9.82 million to enhance water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services in Eritrea. Announced on September 21, 2026, the initiative is coordinated with UNICEF and the Government of Eritrea, aiming to significantly improve access to essential services and bolster climate resilience.
Eritrea faces significant challenges in accessing clean water and proper sanitation, with many communities traveling long distances for basic water needs. The lack of adequate WASH services contributes to health issues and limits economic opportunities, especially in rural areas.
The grant is part of the Climate Action Window, a specialized funding mechanism under the African Development Bank Group, focused on low-income and transitional countries. It aims to reduce the distance to water access to around 500 meters, enhance sanitation facilities in health centers and schools, and promote climate resilience.
The project includes constructing boreholes, installing rural water systems, and modernizing existing infrastructure. It will build 21 new rural water systems and rehabilitate 38 non-functional ones. Additionally, WASH facilities in 10 health centers and 12 schools will be upgraded. The project also involves constructing retention dams and environmental conservation efforts to ensure sustainable water resources.
The initiative supports Eritrea’s social stability and economic development by tackling environmental and socio-economic vulnerabilities. It highlights the importance of sustainable infrastructure and community resilience in achieving long-term development goals.
